How to promote your book: a practical guide for authors
Finishing the manuscript is only half the work. Here is a clear, honest sequence for getting your book in front of readers — from the months before launch to the long tail of discovery that follows it.
Start promoting before publication day
The most common mistake authors make is waiting for the book to exist before talking about it. Promotion works best as a runway: announce the book while it is still in progress, share what it is about and who it is for, and give readers a reason to follow the journey. By the time the book is available, you want an audience already listening — not a cold start.
- Set a publication window and work backwards from it
- Prepare a one-paragraph pitch, a short author bio and a cover image early
- Line up interviews and features so they land around launch, not months later
Put your voice to work with interviews
Readers buy books, but they remember people. A live radio or podcast conversation does what a product page cannot: it lets readers hear your conviction, your humour and the story behind the story. Book Broadcast Network runs live author interviews and broadcasts where authors talk about their work in depth — and the replay keeps finding new listeners long after the live moment.
- Prepare three or four stories from the book you can tell conversationally
- Treat every interview as evergreen content: share the replay, quote it, link it
- One strong conversation outperforms a dozen forgettable posts
Earn editorial coverage and press
Editorial features, press releases and syndicated coverage give your book something advertising cannot buy: a third party saying it matters. A magazine profile places your book in a story; a press release gives newsrooms something to pick up; syndication carries that story into markets you could never reach alone. BBN's Press Desk offers exactly this path — editorial features, press release distribution and international news syndication for authors.
- Lead with the story, not the sales pitch — editors cover narratives
- A special-edition feature becomes a permanent, shareable artefact for your book
- Syndication extends one placement into regional and international audiences
Treat discovery as a sequence, not an event
Launch week is a spike; discovery is a curve. The books that keep selling are the ones with a durable sequence behind them: an interview, then a feature, then a listing where new readers can still find the book months later. On BBN that sequence is built in — a broadcast interview, a magazine story, and a permanent place on the Community Books shelf where readers can browse your cover, excerpt and retailer link at any time.
- Plan at least three moments of coverage across the months after launch
- Keep your book listed where readers actually browse
- Refresh the conversation: new angles, new excerpts, new audiences
Measure what works, then repeat it
Promotion compounds when you pay attention. After each interview or feature, notice what happened: did enquiries rise, did readers mention where they found you, did one outlet outperform the rest? Do more of whatever moved. Authors who treat promotion as an ongoing practice — rather than a launch-week sprint — build an audience that follows them from book to book.
- Ask new readers how they found you and write it down
- Compare channels honestly: one good interview can beat a month of ads
- Carry your audience with you — a newsletter turns one book's readers into the next book's launch
